How to keep players engaged (without being evil)

Video Author: Mark Brown | Game Maker’s Toolkit

Why do some video games keep us rapt and entertained until the closing credits, while others fizzle out and end up on our pile of uncompleted? A look at some key ways developers can keep players interested (without being evil about it).

  • pacing
  • narrative
  • goal agency/ opportunities
  • challenge
  • skinner boxes
  • daily rewards
  • resource decay
  • loss aversion

This is a fantastic video on the many approaches game developers have. My reaction is that there are different ways to engagement; creative thinking and experimentation will play a big part in successfully connecting with people.
