The U.K.’s biggest and most local publishers join Showcase

Google has announced that two UK-based publishing institutions, the Daily Mail and General Trust and the Independent Community News Network, have joined its product and licensing program for news publishers, Google News Showcase. The licensing agreement with DMGT extends an existing partnership and will mean that UK and Australian editions of Mail Online, Metro, iNews, New Scientist, and Extra.ie will be available directly on Showcase. Meanwhile, a partnership with Ping News, set up by the ICNN, will allow the company to offer free trials to regional and national publishers through the Public Interest News Gateway, which aggregates local community and public interest stories for distribution to regional and national news desks. This, in turn, will help create revenue streams for local journalism and establish a more sustainable and diverse news ecosystem. Google’s support for independent journalism in the UK also includes backing for the Bureau of Investigative Journalism’s work, support for UCLan’s research into the future of trusted public interest news, and training for journalists and journalism students.
